About
Welcome to Thomas Guthrie.org. This website has been set up so that you can easily access information, sermons, quotes and articles on Dr Thomas Guthrie (1803 – 1873). My interest in Dr Guthrie began many years ago but I have been actively writing on his life an legacy since 2012. You have perhaps never heard of Thomas Guthrie, and even if you have, you are perhaps wondering why a whole website should be devoted to him and his work. I believe that Thomas Guthrie was a remarkable leader, an incredible preacher, an innovative social reformer and his reach and influence did much to change 19th Century Scotland into a better, more compassionate nation.
The country Guthrie was born into was Scotland that rapidly changing. People were moving from the country to the city, as the 19th century gathered pace industrialisation traditional industries. With industrialisation came mass immigration and with it overcrowding and poverty in Scotland’s major cities.
I suppose primarily I would describe myself as a sinner saved by grace. I have been helped in my Christian life by Thomas Guthrie and I hope you find him helpful too. My original degree was in social science and social work. After 11 years as a social worker I am now working with a third sector charity in Edinburgh. I am married to Kirsteen and have five wonderful boys. As a Highlander I love shinty and continue to support Oban Camanachd through thick and thin. I started blogging and writing about Guthrie in 2012. It has always been my vision to get a Thomas Guthrie website set up and I'm delighted that it is finally here! You can contact me via the website. I hope you enjoy the site and I would love to hear from you.
